We became aware of a need, through someone that attends our Sunday morning adult Bible study (Connections Class) at New Covenant Community Church. The lady that needs our help is Wanda, the mother of one of the work release inmates that comes to New Covenant. Her home is just south of 3rd & Adams Street in the Wood Lawn Estates trailer park. Wanda is diabetic and is disabled.
Here you can see a hole in the deck that is right at the top of the steps. Those boards tend to be a tripping hazard also because they won't stay nailed/screwed down because of the condition of the wood. We will be tearing down a 10x16 foot deck that is old, falling down, and dangerous. Wanda's husband built the deck about 30 years ago, but he's no longer able to do the maintenance on his trailer because he had a stroke, is confined to a wheelchair, and in a nursing home.
A few of the balusters are broken or missing. We plan to rebuild the deck to the currently allowable covenants at Woodlawn, which would allow us to build her a 10x10 deck, plus 1 set of steps and a railing all the way around (except for the side that abuts the trailer).
There are several holes in the decking.
This is just another example of the rotted decking.
We started work on Wanda's deck on Saturday, August 1, 2009. We had the perfect crew for this job -- 5 guys from CCC-L (state work release here in Lincoln) Darrell, Richard E., Tyler, Kyle, & Richard D. and me.
We got the old deck torn down and Amy's Dad volunteered to haul away the debris from it -- we were really grateful he was able to do that for us! Richard D and I took apart the old stairs and Richard used the old stringers as a pattern to cut new ones -- he was the brains behind building the stairs .
We made a great start on our first Saturday -- we got the deck framed, the decking installed and the front set of steps built and installed -- but it took us an additional day to finish up.
We came back on Saturday, August 8 to finish up. Here you can see Darrell working on the back steps -- he helped Richard D on the front set of steps so he had a pretty good handle on how to do it.
Kyle, Tyler and Richard E installed ballusters most of the day whenever they weren't helping Darrell and me figure out how to do the handrails down the steps
Here's Richard & Darrell working on the back steps while Kyle and Tyler work on the ballusters.
By this point we've got handrails on both sets of steps and only have a few more ballusters to install.
Finished Product: Southeast View. Using treated lumber, the cost of the project turned out to be $660.29. We purchased all the materials from the Home Depot on 70th & Highway 2 -- they made a very generous $100 donation toward the project!

We came up a little short, financially, on this project so we're still taking donations. If you are able to make a contribution, make your check payable to “New Covenant Community Church” and write ‘Wanda’ in the memo. You can mail your (tax deductable) donation to:
